WHAT IS HARD WATER?

It's water that is high in certain minerals. The minerals that contribute to water hardness are calcium and magnesium, mainly in combination with bicarbonate, sulphate and chloride. When hard water is heated above 61 degrees (or as it evaporates) the balance between the dissolved minerals is upset and the bicarbonate converts to carbonate. This is what causes limescale!

WILL HARD WATER HARM ME?

Hard drinking water is not considered to be harmful to health. It's more of an inconvenience, but it can be resolved by buying and installing either a hard water filter for your drinking water; the Pearl H, or a whole house system such as the Moby H or Moby TH.

WHAT ARE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF HARD WATER?

  • Scale and scum formation. For example, either on the surface of the water or round hand basins and baths.
  • Difficulty in getting a soapy lather. This is caused by the calcium in the hard water reacting with soaps and detergents.
  • Formation of limescale on kettles, showers, taps; to name but a few!
  • Formation of limescale deposits inside dishwashers, washing machines, immersion heaters.

HARD WATER CAN COST YOU MONEY

Yes, hard water can cost you money, both in terms of heating costs and having to replace white goods. It can shorten the life of clothing, household appliances such as washing machines and dishwashers, and plumbing such as hoses and pipes; basically anything that hard water comes into contact with.

HARD WATER AREAS IN ENGLAND AND WALES - IT'S ALL ABOUT THE GEOGRAPHY!

Look at the map to see whether you're likely to have hard water.

Hard water in England and Wales

Light green - Soft to moderately soft. 0-001 mg/l as calcium carbonate equivalent.

Dark green - Slightly hard to moderately hard. 100-200 mg/l as calcium carbonate equivalent.

Blue - Hard to very hard. Above 200 mg/l as calcium carbonate equivalent.

The table below gives a summary of hardness water levels in major cities in the UK. The levels are given in ppm (parts per million) of calcium carbonate equivalent (the main component of scale). The word equivalent is used to show that it is not calcium carbonate that is being measured (it cannot be as calcium carbonate is not present in water) but that the amount of different hardness minerals present in the water is chemically equivalent to an amount of calcium carbonate.

Area Primary Source Level
Manchester Lake District (Haweswater, Thirlmere), Pennines (Longdendale Chain) 25 ppm
Birmingham Elan Valley Reservoirs 42.8 ppm
Bristol Mendip Hills (Bristol Reservoirs) 228.5 ppm
Southampton Bewl Water 268 ppm
London Lea Valley Reservoir chain 275 ppm

If you live in Scotland; you're unlikely to have hard water.
