An ultraviolet (uv) water filter is an effective, reliable and safe way to destroy bad bacteria in your water. If you've got a private water supply, a uv water filter is a compact, energy efficient and sophisticated disenfection system.
It is not a filter. UV kills bacteria with a lamp which radiates ultraviolet. That is it. If you're on a public utility water supply you do not need UV because your water has been disinfected with chlorine. Browse our range of drinking water filters and mains water filters.
UV water filters require an electricity supply. If you do not have this close to where the UV system is going to be installed then please look at alternatives in our Private Water Supplies category.
Yes we can. We often get sent copies of water analysis reports so that we can provide water treatment recommendations.
For example, your report may have highlighted an issue with manganese and you're unsure which one of our water filters will treat that.
We can help you narrow it down so that you find the right solution for you.
The easiest way for you to send us your water analysis report is to upload the document to our Contact page HERE.

If your household water is from a 'private water supply', for example a well, spring or borehole and you want to feel confident about it's safety or have been made aware of a problem with 'bad' micro-organisms in your water; then installing a uv water filter is your best option.
UV water treatment doesn't restrict your water flow and as private water supply tends to be low pressure, a uv water filter is perfect. You'll need an electricity supply for this type of system.
All of our uv water filters have a stainless steel casing with a removable glass lamp, which you'll need to replace every 12 months as a minimum. We'll send you an email reminder so you don't have to worry about forgetting!
UV units are comprised of a long metal canister that contains one or more UV lamps. The lamps look like fluorescent tubes.
A UV unit is the final stage of disinfection for your private water supply and can eliminate high levels of pathogenic organisms.
The unit is electrically powered and is fairly cheap to run. They are an incredibly popular system, easy to install and don't impart any taste or odour to your water.
You're exposed to uv rays or light every time you step outside, and the sunnier it is the more uv there is. You can't see it but it's responsible for causing sunburn.
UV light plays havoc with the DNA of micro-organisms. When your water flows through a uv water filter, the bacteria in your water is exposed to the uv light which attacks the bacterias genetic code and renders them useless, so they can't function and reproduce. The uv process is simple and highly effective, killing 99.99% of harmful micro-organisms without the need for you to add chemicals into your water.
UV water filters are one of the safest ways to disinfect your water without using chemicals such as chlorine.
For UV to be effective the turbidity and colour of the water must be low. Micro-organisms can be physically protected if there are high levels of suspended particles in the private water supply and/or the water is heavily discoloured. It's therefore important to install appropriate pre-filters to reduce particulate components before the water hits the UV water filter.
If you have iron or manganese present, this can coat the UV water treatment unit with a brown deposit and it wouldn't work properly.
If you're in a hard water area scale can form on the quartz sleeve. It's important to be mindful that this can reduce the effectiveness of the UV treatment. You would need to treat the hardness as part of your UV system setup.
When you're choosing to invest in your property and are considering buying a uv water filter, we feel that it's important to be share the advantages and disadvantages. You can clearly see that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, which is why our uv water filters are so popular. They definitely solve problems.
|Destroys 99.99% of bacteria.||UV light doesn't remove other contaminants from your water such as heavy metals, salts, chlorine, limescale, petroleum or pharmaceuticals.|
|Environmentally friendly as no chemicals involved.||You need electricity.|
|Works day and night 24/7; keeping your water safe.||You need a pre-filter or muck gets onto the quartz sleeve and the uv light can't penetrate to kill all those bad bacteria.|
|You only need to replace the lamp every 12 months or so.|
|You don't need a holding tank; water flows straight through the system.|
|Low electrical needs so cost effective.|
|Doesn't waste any water unlike an ro system.|
|No harmful chemicals so it's safe.|
|Once installed, it's low maintenance.|
|No dirty parts to dispose of.|
|More effective than chlorine or chloramines, especially on some water borne cysts.|
|Doesn't change the taste and odour of your water.|
UV water treatment kills any harmful micro-organisms that are present in your water, including bacteria, viruses and cysts. If these micro-organisms remained in your water, it could cause severe illness. UV water treatment does not remove dissolved organics, inorganic compounds or particles in the water, so you would need to install a pre-filter to remove sediment prior to your water going through the uv system.
You can wave goodbye to the following:
A uv water filter won't remove things like heavy metals, limescale, chlorine, pertroleum products or pharmaceuticals. So, you'll need a pre-filter. A pre-filter will also protect the quartz sleeve so that the uv light can penetrate and do it's job. Without a pre-filter, your water would be murky and form a coating on the quartz sleeve rendering the whole process useless.
When choosing which uv water filter to buy; you need to know your water flow rate as the model must be powerful enough to treat the water flow that you have. The flow rate is determined by how many people are in your household and the demand required. If you need to find out your flow rate time how long it takes you to fill a 1 gallon / 4.5 litre bucket with water. It's always better to oversize your UV system than to undersize. For e,g. if your pump delivers 8gpm it is recommended to install a UV 10gpm system.
UV water treatment is quick, incredibly reliable, safe, clean, easy to maintain; without much effort on your part. Your uv system will only require a yearly change of lamp which is as simple as changing a lightbulb, and also a new pre-filter cartridge every six months or so depending on how many people are in your household.
All of our UV water filters have alarms that are set for 12 months to ensure you are alerted to the need to replace the UV lamp. The sleeves should be changed every 2 years as a minimum; the lamps every 12 months.
