Overview

If you've got a boiling water tap that came with a filter that's not as good as you'd hoped, or it didn't come with one at all, then you've come to the right place. This is a highly effective water filter designed specifically to feed a boiling water tap, whether that's a Quooker, a Qettle or another brand.

  • A better filter for your boiling water tap - improve the taste and smell of the water your tap delivers.
  • Two flow rate options so the filter matches your tap: up to 4 litres per minute, or up to 10 litres per minute.
  • Optional scale inhibiting for hard water areas, protecting your tap's boiling tank from limescale.
  • Suits any make of boiling water tap - it's the flow rate that matters, not the brand.
  • An ideal upgrade if the manufacturer's own filter has disappointed you, or your tap was supplied without one.

Is this right for me?

Choose this if

You have a boiling water tap and you want better filtration than it came with - or it didn't come with a filter at all. Boiling water taps come in a variety of capabilities and capacities, but from the perspective of adding a filter there are only two things you need to consider: the flow rate your tap requires, and whether you need to inhibit scale. Fortunately, we have options for all these scenarios.

Not ideal if

You want filtered water from your standard kitchen tap rather than a boiling water tap (take a look at the Moby or our drinking water filters instead), or you want to filter every tap in the house (see our mains water filters).

What to check before buying

  • Your tap's flow rate: this is the most important thing to get right. Most boiling water taps operate at around two to three litres per minute, but some higher priced models run at up to 7 litres per minute. Most people have the lower flow rate models, but check your tap's specification before you order.
  • Which option to choose: select the 4 litres per minute or lower filter for the majority of taps, or the 10 litres per minute or lower filter if your tap runs at a higher flow rate.
  • Hard water: decide whether you need the scale inhibiting option. If you're in a hard water area, inhibiting scale helps protect the boiling tank inside your tap.
  • Available space: make sure you have room under the sink for the filter alongside your tap's boiling tank.

What it reduces and what it doesn't

The boiling water tap filter reduces:

  • Chlorine - to improve taste and smell
  • Taste and odour
  • Sediment, sand and rust particles
  • Scale formation - with the scale inhibiting option, helping protect your tap's boiling tank

The boiling water tap filter doesn't reduce:

  • Fluoride - take a look at our dedicated fluoride filters instead
  • Water hardness - the scale inhibiting option reduces scale build-up but doesn't soften the water or remove dissolved minerals
  • Bacteria and micro-organisms
  • Heavy metals

How it works

A boiling water tap draws cold mains water into a heated tank, so anything in your water goes into that tank and ends up in your cup. Fitting a filter on the feed to the tap deals with it before it gets there.

Water passes through an activated carbon filter, where chlorine and chemicals are adsorbed onto the carbon and sediment is trapped, giving you noticeably better tasting and better smelling water from the tap. Choose the scale inhibiting option and a small, food-safe dose of polyphosphate is added, which reduces limescale forming inside the tap's boiling tank - important in a hard water area, because a boiling tank is exactly where scale likes to build up.

The one thing to get right is flow rate. A filter that's too small for the tap will restrict it, so match the filter to the flow rate your tap needs.

Specifications

4 litres per minute or lower Up to 4 lpm The majority of boiling water taps, which typically run at 2-3 lpm
10 litres per minute or lower Up to 10 lpm Higher specification taps running at up to 7 lpm

What's included

Printed fitting instructions are supplied, and can also be downloaded here.

Installation & placement

Fit the filter on the cold mains feed that supplies your boiling water tap, so the water is filtered before it reaches the tap's boiling tank. It's normally installed in the cupboard under the sink alongside the tank itself, so allow room for both.

Fitting instructions are supplied with your filter and can also be downloaded here. To change the cartridge, simply follow these instructions.

Maintenance & running costs

Replace the cartridge every 12 months, or sooner if you notice the taste or smell of chlorine returning, to maintain effective filtration and keep protecting your tap. We'll send you an email reminder so you don't have to keep track yourself.

FAQs

Will this filter work with my Quooker or Qettle?

Yes. This filter suits any make of boiling water tap, including Quooker and Qettle. What matters isn't the brand but the flow rate your tap requires, so check your tap's specification and choose the matching option.

Which flow rate option do I need?

Most boiling water taps operate at around two to three litres per minute, so the 4 litres per minute or lower option suits the majority of people. Some higher priced models run at up to 7 litres per minute, and those need the 10 litres per minute or lower option. Check the specification of your tap before you order, and if you're unsure, get in touch and we'll help you work it out.

Do I need the scale inhibiting option?

If you live in a hard water area, it's worth having. A boiling water tap heats water in a tank, and heat is exactly what drives limescale to form, so inhibiting scale helps protect your tap. Bear in mind it reduces scale build-up rather than softening your water.

My tap already came with a filter - why would I change it?

Manufacturers' own filters vary a lot in how much they actually remove, and plenty of people find theirs isn't as good as they'd hoped. Some taps don't come with a filter at all. This filter is a straightforward upgrade for either situation.

How often does the cartridge need changing?

Replace it every 12 months, or sooner if the taste or smell of chlorine starts to return. We'll email you a reminder when it's due.
