What is a mains water filter?

A whole house water filter or mains water filter is plumbed in to the rising main where water enters your house. They provide you with filtered water in your kitchen and at other taps throughout your house should you want it; for example your bathroom or utility room.

Our whole house water filters are suitable for mains water supplies only. If you have a private water supply, your requirements will be different so please take a look at our Private Water filters page.

Stuck and need some advice? You can call us on 01352 838 281 or or send a message.

Is a mains water filter worth it and do they really work?

  • Are YOU sick of the smell of chlorine in your water?
  • Do you DREAM of better tasting water?
  • Do you or members of your household SUFFER from any skin conditions or asthma?

If you've answered YES to any of the questions above, YOU should install a mains water filter and start enjoying the benefits of clean, healthy water throughout your home. Once you've installed a mains water filter, you and your family will never look back.

If you are becoming more concerned about the volume of chemicals that enter your skin via the water you drink, shower or bathe in, a whole house water filter will give you peace of mind as well as great tasting water.  It is thought that the uptake of contaminants entering your body through the water that you shower or bathe in has been underestimated; another reason to install a mains water filter.

Did you know...

that when your water is heated, the chlorine in it vaporises. So when you're in your lovely steamy bathroom enjoying a soak or a shower you could be inhaling up to 50 times more chlorine than what's in a glass of cold unfiltered tap water. It makes sense to fit a whole house water filter. In addition, repetitive exposure to chlorine may contribute to psorasis and eczema, so Installing a mains water filter will benefit you greatly.

Chlorine is routinely added to swimming pools and for some this can put them off going for a swim as their skin becomes itchy and sore. The effects of chlorine can also affect the eyes, respiratory system, sinuses, skin and hair.

It's generally recommended that if your house has an 'open water system' [header tank and immersion heater] then one or more Moby Cold Water Tap filters will be the most beneficial or efficient to install.

We recommend a Doby whole house water filter if you have a 'closed water system' [no header tank or immersion heater].

What are the benefits of a mains water filter?

  • You get clean, filtered water from every tap in your house and there's NO NEED to install a separate water filter tap in your kitchen.
  • They're easy to install and come with fitting instructions, but we normally recommend that our whole house water filters are fitted by an experienced DIY person or a plumber.
  • Chlorine and other volatile organic compounds are removed as soon as they enter your home plumbing system, which means you get fantastic tasting chlorine free water throughout the house if you want it. You'll also benefit from healthier skin and hair.
  • Chlorine and other chemicals will have been removed, so the water used for washing your clothes won't be contaminated.
  • Chlorine vapours won't be released into the air when you're washing the dishes; or yourself! Therefore, you don't have to breathe them in and if you suffer from asthma and/or other allergies; this is a good thing.
  • Before you go fitting a shower filter, think again! Installing one of our whole house water filters is the only truly effective shower filter as it filters the water as soon as it comes into your house; at low temperatures to facilitate the removal of chlorine and other volatile organic compounds.

What is the best mains household water filter?

It really all depends on what you want to filter out of your mains water. Some questions you might want to ask yourself before investing in a mains water filter are:

What is it that you don't like about your water at the moment? And, Is there anything specific that you want to filter out ouf your water?

You may not like the taste or smell of your water in which case you'll want to filter out the chlorine. Or, you may be sick and tired of the limescale in your water and be looking for one of our mains water filters for hard water.

Whatever your wishes are we'll have a mains water filter to suit you.

How often do I need to change the cartridge in my mains water filter?

You'll normally need to replace the water filter cartridge every 6-12 months depending on how much water is being used in your house. We send out email reminders every six months as a prompt for your to check the performance of your mains water filter.

Can I take my mains water filter with me if I move house?

Yes. Just take out the housing and join the two flexi's together with a 1/2" bsp nipple. When you get to your new house just purchase two new flexis and re-install your housing. It really is that easy.

Do I have to install a mains water filter under my sink?

No, you don't. You can install your mains water filter wherever the cold water supply enters your house. This could be a utility room, garage, or other location.

* Watts components are sometimes replaced with other similar quality items due to supply chain issues. Brassware and other plumbing accessories are sourced from UK suppliers.
