Overview

The Moby Fluoride (Moby F) is a single housing mains water filter dedicated to one job: reducing fluoride in your cold water supply. It uses an activated alumina cartridge to adsorb fluoride as water passes through, and is made in the UK.

• Dedicated fluoride reduction using a 4.5" x 10" activated alumina cartridge.
• Important: this unit does not improve taste or odour and does not filter chemicals. If you want fluoride reduction and better tasting water, choose the Moby TF instead.
• Connects to the cold mains feed therefore no separate filter tap required.
• Flexible placement: fit it wherever the cold water enters your home, not only under the sink.
• Compact but capable: requires a minimum space of H 38cm x W 30cm x D 18cm.

Is this right for me?

Choose this if

You specifically want to reduce fluoride from your mains water supply and you're happy with the taste and smell of your water as it is. This is a single-purpose fluoride filter for people who have decided they'd rather not have fluoride in their water.

Not ideal if

You also want to improve taste and odour or reduce chlorine and chemicals; in that case the Moby TF (taste and fluoride) is the better choice. It's also not designed as a multi-contaminant or whole-property treatment system.

What to check before buying

• Available space: ensure you have at least H 38cm x W 30cm x D 18cm where the filter will be fitted.
• Connection size: choose the correct ports for your plumbing - 1/2" (15mm), 3/4" (22mm), 1" BSP, or no ports if you're supplying your own.
• What you want to achieve: confirm you only need fluoride reduction. For taste and odour as well, see the Moby TF.
• Water chemistry: activated alumina works best with neutral to slightly acidic water and at a steady, unhurried flow, which is why the rated flow is modest. If you're unsure about your water, give us a call.

What it reduces and what it doesn't 

The Moby Fluoride filter reduces:

• Fluoride - the activated alumina cartridge is rated to take fluoride from 10ppm down to less than 0.2ppm (see Specifications)

The Moby Fluoride filter doesn't reduce:

• Chlorine, taste and odour - there is no carbon filtration in this unit
• Chemicals, chloramine, PFAS or VOCs
• Limescale and water hardness
• Bacteria and micro-organisms
• Heavy metals

If you want fluoride reduction together with better tasting, chlorine-free water, the Moby TF pairs a carbon block with the activated alumina cartridge.

How it works

Activated alumina is a porous form of aluminium oxide with a very high internal surface area. As water flows slowly through the cartridge, fluoride ions are adsorbed onto the media and held there, reducing the level of fluoride in the water leaving the filter. Because the process relies on contact time between the water and the media, activated alumina filters run at a gentler flow rate than carbon filters.

Installation & placement

You don't have to install this mains water filter under the sink. You can fit it wherever the cold water supply enters your home. This could be in a utility room, garage, or other suitable location - allowing for a minimum space of H 38cm x W 30cm x D 18cm.

Ideally, a qualified plumber or handy person should handle installation.

Maintenance & running costs

The activated alumina cartridge needs replacing periodically to maintain effective fluoride reduction. How often depends on the fluoride level in your water and how much water you use, so it varies from home to home. FAQs

Does the Moby Fluoride Water Filter remove fluoride?

Yes. The Moby Fluoride Water Filter is specifically designed to reduce fluoride in mains drinking water using a specialist activated alumina cartridge. Unlike standard carbon water filters and most water filter jugs, it is engineered specifically for fluoride reduction rather than improving taste or removing chlorine.

Do standard water filters remove fluoride?

No. Most water filters, including activated carbon filters and water filter jugs, are designed to reduce chlorine, improve taste, and reduce odours. They are not intended to remove fluoride. Effective fluoride reduction requires specialist filtration media such as activated alumina or reverse osmosis.

How effective is the Moby Fluoride Water Filter at reducing fluoride?

The activated alumina cartridge is independently tested to reduce fluoride from concentrations of up to 10ppm to below 0.2ppm under laboratory test conditions. Actual performance depends on factors including your incoming fluoride level, water chemistry, flow rate and water consumption.

Why doesn't the Moby Fluoride Water Filter improve the taste of my water?

This model is a dedicated fluoride filter and contains no activated carbon. Chlorine is the main cause of unpleasant taste and odour in drinking water, so because this filter is designed for fluoride reduction it won't noticeably improve taste. If you'd like to reduce both fluoride and chlorine while improving taste, the Moby TF is the better choice.

How often should I replace the fluoride filter cartridge?

The replacement interval depends on both your household's water consumption and the fluoride concentration in your local water supply, so there isn't a fixed lifespan for every installation. If you're unsure how often your cartridge should be replaced, we're happy to help you estimate a suitable replacement schedule based on your water supply and usage.
