What are the most common contaminants in tap water?

Here at Fountain Filters we actively encourage UK households to filter their own tap water instead of buying water in plastic bottles. 

Tap water in the UK is generally very good. It's tested for contaminants and then treated by your water supplier. 

The most common contaminants found in tap water are:

Chlorine
UK water companies treat water with chlorine to disinfect it. Chlorine is highly effective at removing pathogens. 

Chlorine can affect the taste and smell of water which some people do not like. Others have to avoid chlorine because of certain health conditions such as asthma or psoriasis. 

Our chemical filters use carbon block cartridges which easily and effectively remove chlorine from your drinking water, making it taste and smell much better. 

Carbon block cartridges will also remove Trihalomethanes (THMs), a by-product of the chemical disinfectant process and it's reaction to natural organic matter in the water.

At elevated levels THMs may have adverse health effects. 

Sediment is also a common contaminant in tap water. This could include sand, silt, dirt and rust flakes. It depends which part of the country you're in as to how much sediment is in mains tap water. It's normally so fine that it doesn't cause too much of a problem and doesn't pose a risk to health, but people don't like seeing it and therefore wish to remove it. It can be removed, often with pleated sediment cartridges as a pre-filter before other water filtration methods. It's particularly important to remove sediment before water goes through a UV water treatment system if on a private water supply.

Naturally occuring and/or artifically added Fluoride is also another common contaminant. Adding Fluoride to water is a controversial topic and more information about how to remove Fluoride from your drinking water can be found HERE.

Other contaminants that can be found in tap water are heavy metals, bacteria, VOCs, PAHs, herbicides, pesticides and hormones.
