An activated carbon water filter will filter contaminants from water through the process of adsorption. Adsorption is where the contaminants will adhere to the particles inside the carbon water filter cartridge.
Carbon water filters contain an activated carbon water filter cartridge in either granular form such as our Pearl M carbon water filter cartridge or solid form like our Pearl T carbon water filter cartridge.
It's important to highlight that activated carbon is also called activated charcoal. The word activated is sometimes replaced by active. It’s all the same thing.
So, when you see charcoal water filters and carbon water filters, they are the same.
Activated carbon is the magic ingredient for water filtration. It is so porous that one gram of activated carbon has a surface area of over 3000 square metres. This is due to its high surface area to volume ratio. Contaminants in water will adhere to the pores and these pores will literally sponge up contaminants.
Most of our charcoal filters for water contain activated carbon that has been derived from coconut husks. You can get bituminous activated carbon filters. Bitumen is a by-product of the oil industry.

Carbon water filters come with either a canister containing granular activated carbon (GAC) or a solid carbon block cartridge.

A carbon water filter cartridge may also be used in a twin or triple water filter system, depending on what you want to change about your water. This could be the reduction of fluoride, or limescale for example.
