What is a water softener?

A water softener removes calcium and magnesium from your water and replaces these hard ions with sodium or potassium ions. Calcium and magnesium are the minerals that create hard water and all the problems associated with hard water.

A water softener system is vital if you want to extend the lifetime of your plumbing and increase the longevity of your household appliances.

The water softeners we sell require the use of water softener salt.

How does a water softener work?

A water softener system removes calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate from water through a process known as ion exchange.

This useful article gives you a very simple explanation of how water softeners work.

Calcium and magnesium (the hard ions) are replaced with sodium ions which don't have the damaging effects of calcium and magnesium.

It's important to note that a water softener system won't remove other contaminants such as chlorine, chemicals, fluoride. You would need to add an additional stage before your water passes through the softener.

Is it safe to drink water from a water softener?

Yes, most people can drink softened water.

However, we recommend you read our article on whether you can drink softened water as there are some instances where drinking softened water may not be advised.

Benefits of installing a water softener

Our top three benefits of installing a water softener are:

  • Stops the build up of limescale on your dishes, work surfaces, shower screen doors, pipes, and household appliances such as dishwashers, coffee machines, and washing machines.
  • You get a better lather with your soaps and detergents.
  • May improve exacerbating skin conditions such as eczema.

Downsides to installing a water softener

  • May not be suitable for those on a low sodium diet.
  • Removes calcium and magnesium; minerals which are actually good to have in your diet.
  • You've got to keep feeding the water softener system with specialist water softener salt which adds to the cost and time spent on maintenance.
  • Some people don't like the feel of soft water as it can feel slippery and slimy.
  • You're putting salty water down the drain which could impact the environment.

FAQs on water softeners

What maintenance does a water softener require?

It's important that you understand how your water softener works to ensure you keep on top of any problems that may arise. The main maintenance requirement for a water softener is the regular addition of water softener salt.

What types of water softeners are available?

Choosing the best water softener for you requires understanding the different types of water softeners available. Single tank, twin tank, electric, or non-electric.

Can I install a water softener myself, or do I need a professional?

If you are competent at DIY and are confident cutting into your mains water supply, then installing a water softener may be relatively easy. If you don't feel confident, we recommend contacting your local plumber to install the water softener for you.

How often should I add salt to my water softener?

Even the best water softeners require you to add water softener salt. You should check your water softener salt level every month as a minimum and add more if necessary. Follow the instructions in your manufacturers guidelines to ensure your water softener runs effectively and efficiently.
