Do not overlook the critical role that drinking water filter replacement cartridges play in maintaining the efficiency of your water filtration system.
We recommend changing your drinking water filter cartridges every 12 months. Neglecting this can lead to a decline in water quality. Changing water filter cartridges will ensure your system continues to provide you and your family with clean, high-quality, great tasting drinking water which is exactly what it should be doing.
As specialists in providing customers across the UK with replacement drinking water filters, expert information and advice is always available.
Replacement cartridges for drinking water systems, in a home kitchen or small commercial setting, are indispensable for optimal performance. A water filter cartridge will remove contaminants such as chlorine, sediment, and bacteria.
It’s important that you select the right water filter cartridges for your system, change them every 12 months, and keep on top of the minimal maintenance.
There are a wide range of drinking water filter cartridges on the market. The most common ones fit inside a plastic or stainless steel 10” water filter housing, or bowl as they are sometimes called.
This category deals with water filtration cartridges for our range of under sink, inline and ceramic drinking water filters.
We also stock mains water filter cartridges, sediment filters, and reverse osmosis replacement filters.
The technology behind water filter cartridges can vary widely, but the core principle remains the same: trapping and removing unwanted particles from your drinking water.
The material they are made of is usually called the medium or media and there are many different types of media used in water filter cartridges.
Some cartridges use activated carbon (granular or solid) to adsorb impurities, others may utilise mechanical filtration to physically block contaminants, and some may use adhesion.
When you see a micron rating against any cartridge, remember that the smaller the micron rating the smaller the particulates and sediment that water filter cartridge can remove. If you have a multi-stage filtration system the lowest micron rated cartridge goes last in the sequence.

Replacing your drinking water filter cartridges every 12 months as a minimum is critical for maintaining the effectiveness of your water filtration system. Over time, cartridges can become saturated with contaminants, reducing their ability to filter water properly.
If you're unsure about what signs to look out for of when to change drinking water filter cartridges we've written a valuable article that will guide you through the process.
Different cartridges are designed to target different impurities. When we get asked the question ‘what do water filter cartridges remove?’ our answer is always based on the specific contaminants you want to remove from your water.
For example, if you just want to improve the taste and smell of your water we may recommend a chlorine filter cartridge. If you had a problem with lead in your drinking water you'd go for a lead filter cartridge, and if the removal of microplastics was your top priority then a microplastic water filter may be the one for you.
If you wish to remove a broad spectrum of contaminants from your drinking water, you may need a multi-stage filtration system that uses different water filter cartridge types.
The table below looks at each cartridge type, what it removes, and what it’s best for.
| Cartridge Type | Removes | Best for |
| Activated Carbon |

One of the most obvious signs is a noticeable decline in water flow. There may also be a change in the taste and smell of your water. Or you may notice particles or sediment in your water that didn’t use to be in there.
Regularly inspecting your water quality and paying attention to these signs can help you determine when it’s time for a water filter replacement cartridge.
A question that we get asked frequently and one that we've covered in detail since so many people are becoming more environmentally conscious.
The difference between ceramic and carbon filter cartridges is in how they work and the types of contaminants they treat.
Ceramic filters trap particles larger than their pore size and are excellent for removing bacteria, protozoa, cysts, sediment, dirt and rust.
Carbon filters use adsorption where contaminants stick to the carbon’s surface. They excel at removing chlorine, VOC’s, pesticides, herbicides, and improving taste and smell.
The micron rating of a water filter cartridge tells you the size of the smallest particles it can capture. For example, a 5 micron filter cartridge will trap particles 5 micron and larger. A 0.5 micron filter will trap particles down to 0.5 micron in size. Micron rating matters because it determines what contaminants can be removed and the flow rate you can expect.
Yes. You should replace O-rings every 2-3 years as a precautionary measure. One of the main reasons for changing O-rings is that as they age and compress, and the housing bowl needs to be tightened excessively to get a good seal and stop leaks. This constant overtightening leads to difficulty loosening the bowl from the cap on the next water filter cartridge replacement.
