There are a wide range of water filter cartridges on the market. The most common ones fit inside a plastic or stainless steel water filter housing, or bowl as they are sometimes called.
Water filter housings vary depending on the use, but the most common sizes are 10" and 20".
A water filter cartridge will drop straight into the housing, and they are composed of various materials that trap, adsorb, or modify contaminants in water.
There is a lot to be said for trusting your sense of taste and smell when it comes to water, but senses are not all you should rely on.
Your water filter system will give you strong signals as to when you need to replace you water filter cartridge. These signals include a drop in flow rate, the taste and smell of your water changes, your water looks different, for example, you notice there is scale building up again on your appliances.
The lifespan of water filter cartridges is based on the amount of water that passes through them and not by time. The more people there are in your household the more quickly the cartridges will lose their effectiveness.
But to be honest, time is the easiest indicator, as how many of us keep a record of the amount of water we're using?
That's why we align ourselves with industry best practice and say that you should buy a water filter replacement cartridge every 12 months minimum to avoid the risk of bacteria breaking through into your drinking water.
This doesn't mean that you shouldn't change your water filter cartridge before 12 months is up if you notice any significant changes to your water.

One of the main reasons for changing O-rings is that as they age and compress, the housing bowl of your water filter needs to be tightened excessively to get a good seal and stop leaks. This constant over tightening leads to difficulty loosening the bowl from the cap on the next water filter cartridge replacement.
Even if there are no leaks you may find that the profile of the O-ring becomes flattened because of prolonged time under compression. The cross section should be round and if it's not it may not seal easily.
We recommend that you replace the O-rings every 2-3 years as a precautionary measure, and you'll find O-rings as a purchase option on all water filter cartridges.
