How can I Remove Fluoride from my Drinking Water

If you live in an area with high levels of fluoride in the water supply, you might consider buying one of our fluoride filters.

One way of getting fluoride free water in the UK is to invest in our Oyster fluoride water filter. All water supplies in the UK contain some fluoride. We either receive water which has had its level of fluoride adjusted, or has a natural fluoride content of around 1 milligram per litre.

You can mount our fluoride water filter either as an under sink water filter sytem or on a bench top.

The housing dimensions are 34H x 26W x 13D (volume occupied in cm).

Your kit will include:

• 2 x white filter housings.
• 1 x dual white housing bracket.
• 1 x 5 micron activated carbon block cartridge (F109009) for chlorine, taste, odour and sediment.
• 1 x 10 micron activated alumina cartridge (IF-SM-AA010) for fluoride reduction. Can also reduce levels of hydrogen chloride, hydrogen sulphide and carbon dioxide.*
• A choice of drinking water filter taps or you can choose the 'no tap' option. You would choose the 'no tap' option if you already have a tap or wish to buy a 3 way tap.
• Either a self-piercing saddle valve or a 15mm compression valve.
• Red and Blue tubing (2 metres of each).
• 1 x housing spanner.
• DIY instructions - no need for a plumber.

Cartridge details:

• 1 x Watts F109009 coconut shell carbon block filter cartridge for chlorine, taste and odour reduction in water.
• 2.5 x 10".
• 5 micron - up to 99% chlorine removal.
• Chlorine reduction >4,000 gallons @ 1.0gpm or 12 months; whichever comes first.
• Thick wall carbon construction for superior performance.
• Outperforms granulated activated carbon (GAC) cartridges as it has superior chlorine reduction, lower pressure drop and will not channel.
• Media wrap between centre tube and carbon block to reduce carbon fibres.
• Maximum operating pressure - 125psi.
• Operating temperature - 50°F to 125°F / 10°C to 52°C.
• Tested and certified NSF/ANSI standard 42 for materials only.
• FDA grade components and materials.
• Tested and verified by independent laboratory testing.

*On occasion it may be necessary to substitute the Watts brand for an alternative fluoride reduction cartridge. 

What order do the cartridges go in?

In most circumstances the lowest micron rated cartridge goes last in the sequence (on the water out / blue tubing side). For the Oyster Fluoride water filter the 10 micron activated alumina cartridge goes first in the sequence, followed by the 5 micron carbon block cartridge.

What is fluoride?

Or hydrofluorosilicic acid as it is also known is a waste product of the phosphate fertiliser industry.

There is a wealth of information on the internet about what fluoride is and where it comes from, but we're going to hazard a guess that the reason you're here is because you're thinking of installing a fluoride water filter in your home.

Is there Fluoride in my water?

The simple answer is yes.

Fluoride is a naturally occurring element found in soil, water and some foods.

In some areas of the UK they artificially top up the natural fluoride levels as part of a government wide initiative to improve dental health.

It's estimated that around 5.8 million people in the UK receive artifically fluoridated water up to a level of 1mg of fluoride per litre of water.

They don't artificially fluoridate water in Wales and Scotland.

• North East including Tyneside
• East Midlands including Derbyshire
• Eastern England
• North West including Cumbria and Cheshire
• Yorkshire & Humber

If you're unsure about fluoride in your water, your water company should be able to tell you how much fluoride is in your water supply and whether they add fluoride artificially.

Is fluoride safe?

Public debate has been raging for many years about the safety of fluoride in water and whether the benefits outweigh the pitfalls.

There are medical conditions associated with fluoride exposure.

Dental fluorosis - fine white pearly lines or flecking on the teeth's surface. More severe dental fluorosis can cause the tooth's enamel to become pitted and discoloured.

Fluoride levels are very closely monitored in the UK's water supplies by the Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI)

It is unlikely that a home water filter jug system such as a Brita filter will remove fluoride, so be careful. If you want to remove the fluoride in your water then you need to install a fluoride water filter or reverse osmosis system. We strongly recommend a fluoride water filter over reverse osmosis as they don't waste nearly as much water; water that you're paying for.
