It's so important to keep your UV water filter running smoothly. Below you'll find tips on when to clean and when to replace your UV water filter components. Learn the basics of how often, why, and how to maintain your system for maximum efficiency!
UV water filters are an effective way to disinfect your drinking water and improve its taste. Keeping your UV filter in top condition will ensure that it runs efficiently and effectively at all times. Below, you'll find tips on when and how to clean, inspect, and replace parts of your UV filter for optimal performance.
The glass lamps in your UV water filter play a critical role in disinfecting the water going into your home. Check the lamp regularly for signs of wear-and-tear, such as cracks or discoloration. If it’s damaged, replace the lamp immediately to avoid losing any disinfecting benefits of your filter. Most lamps should be replaced every 12 months, but be sure to read the manufacturer’s instructions for more specific information on replacement intervals.
We currently stock Luminor, Atlas and compatible lamps for Watts UV water filters.
The quartz sleeve is a component of the UV water filter system, and it encloses the lamp to keep it safe from contact with the water. Depending on your specific UV filter, the quartz sleeve should be replaced every 24 months or as needed. Regular maintenance of your UV system will ensure that you get maximum performance from your filter.
Depending on the water quality, the quartz sleeve may require periodic cleaning. At a minimum, the quartz sleeve should be cleaned on an annual basis. The following steps outline a basic cleaning procedure.
Step 1: If a by-pass assembly is installed, shut the inlet valve off to prevent water flow through the system. Otherwise, turn off main water inlet valve (and/or turn off the water pump).
Step 2: Disconnect power cord of UV system from electrical outlet.
Step 3: Release water pressure by opening a downstream tap and then close the outlet shut-off valve (if any). If there is no outlet shut-off valve, expect water to drain from the system as the head pressure in the system will cause the water to flow back down.
Step 4: Remove the captive ground screw from the ground lug on the UV reactor.
Step 5: Remove the lamp connector from the reactor (gland nut) by pushing the LUMI-loc connector in and turning it ¼ turn counter-clockwise. Disconnect the lamp connector from the lamp. CAUTION: the lamp may be hot!
Step 6: Being careful to touch only the ceramic ends, remove the lamp out of the reactor.
Step 7: Unscrew the gland nut from the reactor exposing the end of the quartz sleeve.
Step 8: Remove the quartz sleeve and o-ring by gently twisting and pulling the quartz sleeve.
Step 9: Using a soft, lint-free cloth or towel wipe the sleeve down using a commercial scale cleaner (i.e. CLR®️ or LIME-A-WAY®️). This removes scaling or iron deposits that may be on the outside of the quartz sleeve. Be careful not to get any moisture or liquids inside of the sleeve.
Step 10: Dry the sleeve with separate cloth.
Step 11: Replace the o-ring and slide the sleeve back into the reactor following steps 7 and 8 from the installation section of the manual.
Regularly inspecting your UV water filter for any potential issues is important. If you notice any leakage, damage or cracks in the quartz sleeve, it's best to replace it immediately. Keeping an eye out for any signs of damage will ensure that your UV water filter lasts and keeps your water disinfected to the highest standard.
Consider the quality and usage rate of your water when determining how often to clean or replace your UV filter. Stagnant or high-usage water should be monitored more frequently than low-usage water, as it can lead to greater levels of pollution and contamination in a short period of time. If you’re using your UV water filter on an everyday basis, make sure to check it at least once a month to make sure it’s still functioning properly.
Regular maintenance of your UV water filter involves changing the pleated sediment filter cartridge as needed. Over time, it may become clogged with dirt and other debris, which can reduce its effectiveness in filtering out impurities from the water. When this happens, replace the old water filter cartridge with a new one to get optimal performance from your UV filter and ensure clean, disinfected drinking water.
What our customers have to say about us
Great 3-way tap, which was well packaged, with clear instructions. Our plumber commended the tap as good quality and easy to plumb in and connect to both water supply and under-sink filter. Looks brilliant in our new kitchen. Thanks to Fountain Filters for a helpful website and speedy delivery service.
Great product, simple to install including hints on common installation challenges which I did have and overcame instantly because of the care taken by the seller. Whole of house now has soft water without a noticeable drop in pressure. Has made a massive difference throughout.
It was a small but important order: replacement o-ring with silicon for my water filter housing. when I told them I had not received the articles after 7 days, they without fuss dispatched a replacement with the result I received the original and replacement 3 days later! Very responsive customer service.
After moving into a property with a fresh water supply, I turned to Fountain Filters for advice on replacing the water filter system. I purchased the Moby Twin Sediment System and it has been a worry-free system. Even changing the filters was far easier than the old system. Cannot fault this company on speed of service or quality of advice.
